Flourless Whole Orange and Grapefruit Cake

Inspired by the traditional Sicilian Whole Orange Cake, my recipe is flourless and includes zesty grapefruit too! Made with whole blended oranges and grapefruits, ground almonds and flax seeds, this moist and fragrant cake is wheat free, gluten free, and just plain delicious!


  • 1 orange

  • 1 grapefruit

  • 1 orange or grapefruit, sliced into thin rounds

  • 6 eggs

  • 250 grams caster sugar

  • 250 grams almond meal

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 tablespoons icing sugar for sprinkling


  • Wash the orange and grapefruit and place in a large pot filled with enough water to cover the fruit. Bring to the boil then let the fruit simmer in the water for around 1 hour, or until they are soft.

  • Remove the fruit from the water then carefully (they will be hot) cut the ends off the fruit then chop them in half. Put them in a blender and blend until it forms a smooth purée. Set aside to cool slightly.

  • Preheat oven to 160 degrees celsius (fan-forced) or 180 degrees. Grease and line a cake tin with baking paper. Arrange citrus slices around the base of the tin and set aside.

  • Beat the eggs, vanilla, salt and caster sugar in a large bowl until pale and frothy (about 2 minutes on high using hand-held beater or stand mixer with whisk attachment).

  • Add the fruit purée and beat just to combine. Fold in the almond meal and baking powder then pour the batter into the prepared cake tin.

  • Bake for 55-60 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out cleanly.

  • Allow to cool completely before serving! Please enjoy!

Notes: if you don’t have any grapefruits in the house feel free to use another orange, or any other citrus fruit that takes your fancy!
